Benagil Cave – Algarve, Portugal
Portugal is a country full of spectacular sights, but one attraction in particular stands out – Benagil Cave. It is a magical sea cave, hidden on the Algarve coast, known for its characteristic opening in the ceiling through which light enters, creating an extraordinary atmosphere. If you’re planning a trip to Portugal, this attraction must be on your list!
Benagil Cave – What Is It and Why Is It Worth Visiting?
Benagil Cave (Port. Algar de Benagil) is a naturally formed rock cave that dates back thousands of years. Hollowed out by the power of waves and wind, it is one of the most picturesque places on the Algarve coast. What makes it unique is the impressive space inside, the sandy beach and the famous “God’s Eye” – a large opening in the cave’s ceiling, through which sunlight enters, creating a spectacular lighting effect.
How to Get to Benagil Cave?
The cave is located near the town of Benagil, between Lagos and Albufeira. You can’t reach it on foot because it is surrounded by cliffs – you can only get there from the sea.
Transport options:
– Boat cruise 🚤
Numerous motorboat trips are organized from Benagil, Carvoeiro, Albufeira and Portimão.
Prices: from €25 to €40 per person.
Advantage: You get to see more of the Algarve’s hidden caves and rock formations.
Disadvantage: the boat does not always allow you to go down to the beach inside the cave. Choose small boats that can get close, large boat trips are offered and unfortunately most of the interesting caves are omitted in this case.
– Kayak or SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) 🏄♂️
You can rent a kayak or a SUP board at Benagil Beach.
Cost: approximately €20-30 for an hourly rental.
Advantage: you have complete freedom and can stay on the beach in a cave.
Disadvantage: requires good fitness and swimming skills as the sea can be rough (very rough in some places).
– Swimming 🏊♀️ (for the brave ones)
The cave is located approximately 200 meters from Benagil Beach.
This is not recommended due to strong currents and boat traffic.

Best Time to Visit
🌅 Early morning (8:00–10:00) – least tourists, best light for photos. 🌞 Noon – intense sun shines through the opening in the cave, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere. 🌊 Winter (November–March) – fewer people, but stormy seas possible.

1. Praia da Marinha 🌊 One of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, with cliffs and turquoise water. It is located a short drive from Benagil. 2. Seven Hanging Valleys Trail 🥾 A 10-kilometer trail leading along the cliffs, offering spectacular views of the coast. 3. Practical Tips
✅ Book your trips in advance, especially during the summer season. ✅ Bring a waterproof bag for electronics if you’re going kayaking or SUP. ✅ Avoid swimming into the cave if you are inexperienced – the currents can be strong. ✅ Wear water shoes if you plan to go down to the beach.
